Sunbury Health Club takes the Gutsy Challenge

August 29th, 2011

Ivan Morse runs Re-Creation Health Club in Sunbury Victoria. The club provides exercise and wellbeing programs for adults as well as healthy activities like swimming classes for kids.

Ivan saw the Gutsy Challenge TV ad and thought the getting involved would be just the ticket for his club members. Ivan enrolled the swim school in the Gutsy Challenge and promoted the initiative to the swim school students. He set up a promotional table at the school, with flyers and posters about the Challenge.

Throughout the swim school’s Gutsy Challenge week the students participated in lots of activities to raise awareness about healthy eating.

Some of the activities included:

  • Bringing in a fruit or vegetable carving
  • Asking parents and kids to take a food quiz
  • Growing edible plants like carrot tops, alfalfa and bean sprouts
  • Fun swimming pool games
  • Trying out cool ways to prepare healthy food like fruit faces and delicious fruit kebabs.

Re-Creation Health club members have loved being part of the Gutsy Challenge. Parents have supported the initiative as a way to help their children learn about making healthy eating choices, and kids have loved making otherwise boring fruit and vegies fun.

The club’s goal is to raise $1000 for the GI CANCER Institute through sponsors, competitions and donations from the Sunbury community.  Sunbury has really gotten behind Ivan and the Gutsy Challenge with a story in the local newspaper and support from local businesses.

The GI CANCER Institute gives Ivan and Sunbury a big thumbs up for their awesome ideas and for making a difference to their health and the lives of people with gastro-intestinal cancers.

Gutsy Challenger Profile – Introducing Lachlan!

August 15th, 2011

We’re always thrilled to hear from you about how you’re going on the Gutsy Challenge. Recently Lachlan wrote to us to tell us he had decided to do the challenge all by himself.

Lachlan is 6 years old – he is in Year 1 at school. He heard about the Gutsy Challenge from our ad on TV (you can watch it here) and he and his mum decided to give it a go. They asked friends and family to sponsor Lachlan in the Gutsy Challenge.

Before starting the Challenge, Lachlan was already eating 3 pieces of fruit and one vegetable a day. He really likes fruit, so he didn’t find it hard to eat the 2 fruit a day he needed to reach his target. But he was only eating one vegetable a day, so he and his mum tried some new vegetables. They tried red capsicum, mushrooms, zucchini and Chinese vegetables. Lachlan discovered he likes more vegetables than he thought! He also learnt lots about why it’s important to eat enough fruit and veg from the fun games on the Gutsy Challenge website.

Lachlan says he felt happy while doing the challenge – we bet his mum was happy he was doing it too! We’re all really proud of you Lachlan – what a hero!

It’s time for Corn on the Cob!

August 4th, 2011

The weather has been so nice and warm this week, it has made us think about summer and all the lovely fruit and vegetables that remind us of warm weather. Corn on the cob is one of our favourite summer time vegetable meals. It’s super easy to make and you can cook it outside on the BBQ with an adult helping you.

Here’s an easy recipe that you can show your parents and ask them to help you make.

Making healthy food fun

July 22nd, 2011

The TV series Masterchef tells us that food not only has to taste good, but it has to look good too. Regardless of a perons age, when fruit and vegetables are made to look interested, we can’t help but want to eat them.

So how do you make fruit and vegies fun? Well it’s easy really.

1. Dust off your imagination
2. Get out the fruit and vegetables
3. Hit up your old pal Google for ideas

Here’s are some ideas that we found online to help start you thinking

Vegie ladies – Hilarious!

We don’t usually repost videos that are ads for other companies – but we thought this ‘vegie’ take on Beyonce’s “Single Ladies” song was too good not to share.

Let your kids have fun with cooking

July 19th, 2011

We’ve had many parents tell the Gutsy Challenge that getting children involved in preparing meals and cooking is a great way to inspire their  children to eat fruit and vegetables.

It certainly makes sense – we all take pride in the things that we make. Particularly when we get to eat them.

Here are some ideas:

  • Set aside time for an activity on the weekend that involves cooking fruit or vegetables with your children. Let them take control. If you are afraid they might make a mess, set up outside.
  • Involve your children in lunch or dinner preparations. Even if they are young they can decorate fruit salads with strawberrys or grapes.
  • Turn fruit and vegetables into an art session and then eat the results – there are loads of funny faces, patterns and animal shapes that you can create

Fruit & Vegetables – or just fun?

July 18th, 2011

One way to make eating fruit and vegetables fun is to create fun looking designs with the food. Check out these flowers made from salad:

Or check out this vegetable face man!

Or this animal – WOW

We’ll be posting fun fruit and vegetable ideas right throughout the Gutsy Challenge – right up until it finishes at the end of September.

Send us your photos of fun fruit and vegetables and we’ll post them here and on our facebook page.
